Wax Studio

Wax carving and forming is a sculptural process done, in this case, with the intention of being cast into bronze. Sculptures are created through manipulating the wax with hot tools, adding and subtracting material until the desired form is reached. Once wax sculptures are completed and ready to cast, they are attached to a wax sprue system. These systems resemble a tree, typically made with a wax bar center ‘trunk’ with wax rod ‘branches’ shooting off the center piece. Attached to the wax rods are the sculptures, forming an easy circulatory system for the bronze to flow. An example of this sprue system can be viewed at the bottom of this page, and further explanation of the casting process can be viewed over at the Bronze Studio.
