Clay Studio

Larger ceramic sculptures are often formed around a structural core called an armature. Once completed, the clay body is dried to a state known as ‘leather hard’ where the sculpture is then cut apart, hollowed out, then reassembled as a hollow shell. If the piece is too large to be fired as a whole, such as the life size sculpture of Adam depicted below, the hollow disassembled parts are fired separately and reassembled after firing.
